Why Chester at Christmas?
Why Chester at Christmas
Chester does Christmas properly. The Christmas Market runs from 18 November to 22 December 2026, set between the Town Hall and the Cathedral, and around it the whole city seems to switch on: lights strung along the medieval Rows, parades winding through the streets, hundreds of decorated trees inside a cathedral that has stood here for centuries.
For groups, it’s the perfect destination for a festive trip. Everything sits within the city walls and is easily walkable, coach parking is a short stroll from the centre, and there are enough festive shows, light trails and long lunches to fill a day trip or a two-night break without anyone running out of things to do.
This itinerary pulls together the key dates, the places to eat and stay, and the practical details you need to plan a festive group visit. Dates and prices are correct at the time of writing; please check with each venue before you confirm bookings.

Getting here and coach parking
Coaches park at Little Roodee car park, Chester CH1 1SL, run by Cheshire West and Chester Council. It sits beside the racecourse and the River Dee, just below the city walls, so passengers can be at the Christmas Market on foot in around 10 to 15 minutes.

Tips for drivers and group leaders
Take your ticket from the machine marked for coaches and oversize vehicles, and use the marked coach bays. Penalty notices have been issued to vehicles parked outside the markings.
The city centre has extended vehicle restrictions during the Christmas Market weeks, with security bollards raised for longer than usual. Plan on Little Roodee as your drop-off and pick-up point rather than the central streets.
Our Christmas in Chester coach travel guide covers parking and facilities in more detail.
Arriving by rail
Chester station is roughly a 17-minute walk from the Christmas Market, with direct services from Manchester, Liverpool, North Wales and London.
Suggested itinerary: two festive days in Chester
Arrive on a Thursday if you can. That's parade night, and the Christmas Market stays open late. Timings below are a guide, so adjust them around your group's pace and the dates you travel.
Day one: the city dressed for Christmas
Morning. Drop off at Little Roodee and stroll into the city past the castle and along the river, or climb onto the walls for your first view of the rooftops. Head straight for the Cathedral and its Christmas Tree Festival while it's calm, then take a moment in the cloisters or take climb 216 steps up to the top of the tower on a Tower Tour, taking in breath-taking views of the cathedral’s interior, one city, two countries and five counties!.
Lunch. Walk two minutes to Chester Market, where everyone can choose their own lunch and the group can regroup at the long tables.
Afternoon. Time to explore. Browse the chalets of the Christmas Market around the big tree in Town Hall Square, then lose an hour or two on the Rows, picking up gifts from Chester's independent shops. Check in to your hotel and freshen up.
Evening. An early dinner at Maray on Northgate Street, then out into Town Hall Square for the parade (12 Days of Christmas Parade 19 November, Lantern Parade 26 November, Winter Watch Parade 3 December or Winter Watch and Saturnalia Parade 10 December). If you're not travelling on a parade night, book one of the Cathedral's Christmas concerts instead and hear carols ring around the Nave.

Day two: history, theatre and light
Morning. Walk a stretch of the city walls to the Eastgate Clock, then join a guided walk through Roman and medieval Chester, from the amphitheatre to Grosvenor Park.
Lunch. Finish the walk at Grosvenor Park and head down to The Groves for Southern-style barbecue at Hickory's Smokehouse. Its River Room looks right out over the Dee, and the meats come off smokers brought over from Tennessee and Missouri.
Afternoon. From 4 December, catch a matinee of Rapunzel at Storyhouse. Before then, or for groups who'd rather keep exploring, take time for a last look round the market and a drink up at Rooftop Social Club.
Evening. Coach to Chester Zoo for Lanterns and Light, with slots from 4.30pm. Adult groups can pick one of the new adults-only evenings, then head back into the city for a celebratory dinner at The Forge.
Day three (optional)
Stop at Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet on the way home for a final round of Christmas shopping.
Short on time? The day trip
Arrive mid-morning for the Christmas Tree Festival, lunch at Chester Market, spend the afternoon at the Christmas Market and on the Rows, and stay on for a Thursday parade before the coach home.
Chester Cathedral at Christmas
The Christmas Tree Festival opens on 25 November 2026 and fills the Cathedral with more than 80 real trees, each decorated by local schools and businesses around this year's theme, Spirit of Christmas. Step in from the cold and the first thing that hits you is the scent of pine, then the colour, then the sheer scale of it all under that medieval roof.
Good to know for groups
Pre-booking is recommended for quicker entry. The booking link is due to go live shortly on the Cathedral website.
Children aged 5 and under go free. Sundays need no booking and carry no entry fee.
Last entry is 5.30pm. Between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day the Cathedral closes at 4pm, with last festival entry at 3.30pm.
Parts of the Nave and the café close for some events during the festival, so check closures before you fix your timings.
For group bookings and enquiries, contact the Cathedral office on 01244 500959.

Chester Christmas Market
Wednesday 18 November to Tuesday 22 December 2026, Town Hall Square and Northgate Street, CH1 2HJ.
Rows of wooden chalets wrap around the city's big Christmas tree, with the Gothic Town Hall on one side and the Cathedral just behind. It is a market you can actually get round, which groups love: around 70 to 80 stalls selling handmade gifts, decorations and local produce, with mulled wine, hot food and sweet treats to keep everyone warm while they browse.
Opening hours: Sunday to Wednesday - 10:30am - 6:30pm, Thursday to Saturday - 10:30am - 8pm
Best time to go: late afternoon, as the light fades and the chalets glow. Weekday visits are calmer for larger groups.
Access: vehicle access to Town Hall Square is restricted during market hours, so plan to walk in from Little Roodee.
Santa: Santa's Grotto at the Town Hall and Grotto on the Square (20 November to 24 December) are handy for family groups.
The parades
Chester's festive parades are free, unticketed and run on Thursday evenings, when the Christmas Market stays open late. Build a Thursday into your itinerary and your group gets the market, the lights and a street spectacle in one evening.
Thu 19 Nov 2026 - 12 Days of Christmas Parade
The official start of Chester's Christmas, with community groups, performers and Father Christmas himself
Thu 26 Nov 2026 - Lantern Parade
Cheshire schoolchildren carry handmade lanterns from Town Hall Square through the city centre
Thu 3 December 2026 - Winter Watch Parade
Chester's own medieval tradition, with fire breathing, sword fights and a cast of dragons, devils, angels and the Lord of Misrule
Thu 10 December 2026 - Winter Watch and Saturnalia Parade
The Roman Legion joins the Winter Watch for a final, fiery march through the streets
The story behind the Winter Watch
The Winter Watch dates back to the 1400s, when Chester's leaders handed the keys of the city to the City Watch, an early police force, who patrolled the streets to keep everyone safe over Christmas. A banquet followed. Today's parade keeps the pageantry and adds a ghostly samba band, fire skeletons and Jack Frost. Nowhere else does anything quite like it.
Tips for groups
Parades have traditionally started at 7pm from Town Hall Square. Arrive by 6.30pm for a good spot.
Central streets close to traffic on parade days, so coaches should stay at Little Roodee.
Storyhouse: Rapunzel
Friday 4 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, Storyhouse, Hunter Street, CH1 2AR.
Storyhouse's Christmas show is a firm family tradition in Chester, and this year it's Rapunzel, a brand new Storyhouse Originals pantomime written by Anne Odeke, with Charlie Mae McKevitt in the title role. Expect big hair, big beats, dazzling dance routines and a soundtrack of pop hits, all wrapped up in a fast, funny retelling of the fairytale.
Storyhouse itself is worth the visit. The Art Deco former cinema is now Chester's cultural hub, home to a theatre, cinema and library under one roof, and it sits just a few minutes' walk from the Christmas Market and Town Hall Square.
Tickets: on sale now via storyhouse.com, from £17.70 for Storyhouse members.
Groups: contact the Storyhouse box office for group rates and availability, especially for December weekends and the school holidays.
Pair it with: a matinee followed by the Christmas Market as the lights come on, or an afternoon at the market before an evening performance.
Lanterns and Light at Chester Zoo
Friday 13 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, 4.30pm to 8pm. Chester Zoo, Upton-by-Chester, CH2 1EU.
After dark, Chester Zoo becomes something else entirely. Lanterns and Light returns for 42 nights with a redesigned route, walking you through suspended glowing jellyfish, fibre optic tunnels and drifting, glistening feathers, past fire gardens, laser-lit trees and a cathedral of light. Life-sized animal puppets, brought to life by performers, roam the trail, and the zoo's partnership with Sony Music fills it all with sound.
There's festive food and drink, fairground rides and plenty of photo moments along the way, so it suits multi-generational groups as much as families.
Tickets: on sale now at chesterzoo.org, from £12. Popular slots sell out quickly, so book early.
Adults-only evenings: new for 2026, on selected dates for guests aged 18 and over. Ideal for adult groups and Christmas socials.
Quiet hour: a calmer 4pm session with limited numbers on selected dates.
Flexible tickets: Anytime Tickets let you arrive at any slot on your chosen date, and the new Anytime Any Date Ticket covers any date and time.
Getting there: the zoo is a short drive north of the city centre, just off the M56, with free on-site parking every night. Contact the zoo to confirm coach arrangements for your group.
The zoo also hosts Christmas Party Nights from 27 November to 19 December 2026, worth a look for corporate or social groups.
Where to eat
Chester eats well, and some of its best tables sit within a few minutes' walk of the Christmas Market. Book early for December, especially for larger groups and Thursday parade nights.
Chester Market Exchange Square, off Northgate Street, CH1 2AR. Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday 8am to 10pm, Sunday 10am to 9pm, closed Mondays.
The answer for groups who can never agree on lunch. Chester has held a market since its first charter in 1159, and today's purpose-built hall mixes traditional butchers and produce stalls with street food kitchens, a central bar and more than 400 seats. Everyone wanders off, picks what they fancy and meets back at the long tables. It's a two-minute stroll from the Christmas Market and Storyhouse.
Rooftop Social Club Levels 8 and 9, Pepper Street multi-storey car park, CH1 1DF.
Chester from above, with a festive drink in hand. Rooftop Social Club has a retractable roof, heated cabanas and chalets, curling lanes, shuffleboard and a karaoke chalet for up to 12, plus street food kitchens and bars run by local favourites. It holds up to 300 guests, so it's a strong shout for private hire, Christmas socials and groups who want something a little different. See rooftopsocial.club for this year's Christmas programme.
The Forge Hotel Indigo, Grosvenor Park Road, CH1 1QQ.
Tucked inside Hotel Indigo, The Forge blends contemporary design with rustic charm and cooks the best of British produce over open flames. Its meat comes from Aubrey Allen, a third-generation family business and supplier to the Royal household, with beef dry-aged for at least 28 days. The Forge was awarded two AA Rosettes for Culinary Excellence in 2023, and the cocktail trolley that comes to your table is a lovely touch on a festive night out. For groups, private dining spaces offer seasonal set menus or sharing dishes, and the team can arrange full or part exclusive hire. Call 01244 735765 or enquire online, and see The Forge's Christmas page for festive menus.
Hickory's Smokehouse The Groves, Souters Lane, Chester.
The very first Hickory's opened here on the banks of the Dee in 2010, and it's been a Chester favourite ever since. Pitmasters slow cook ribs, pulled pork and chicken for up to 12 hours on smokers shipped over from Tennessee and Missouri, and the bourbon list runs to more than 25. The River Room and veranda look straight out over the water, the space is designed with groups and families in mind, and there's a children's menu for younger guests. Brunch is served until 2pm for early arrivals.
Maray 41 Northgate Street, CH1 2EF.
The Liverpool-born favourite now has a home on Northgate Street, minutes from Storyhouse, the Town Hall and the Cathedral. Maray serves Middle Eastern-via-Paris sharing plates, including its famous Disco Cauliflower, alongside creative cocktails and a well-chosen wine list. Plenty of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free dishes, a £19.95 weekday lunch menu and flexible seating for parties of all sizes make it ideal for a pre-theatre meal.
Where to stay
Stay a night or two and your group gets the market at dusk, a parade or a show, and a slow breakfast before a morning on the walls. Chester's hotels range from five-star grandeur to great-value city stays, many within an easy walk of Town Hall Square. Contact hotels directly for group rates and coach parking.
