Heritage Chester - 48 hours in the city

Step back through centuries of heritage in Chester, one of Britain’s most walkable historic cities. From Roman legacies and medieval treasures to elegant afternoon teas and river cruises, this two-day itinerary is designed with groups in mind and showcases the very best of Chester’s cultural, architectural, and culinary experiences.

Day 1:

Visit Chester Cathedral, St Werburgh Street, Chester CH1 2HU

Experience history, worship and culture at Chester Cathedral with a guided tour. A place of heritage, community, and faith in the heart of the city.

Opening times: Mon – Sat 9.30am - 6pm, Sunday 10am – 6pm.

Tours of Chester Cathedral 

Visit Grosvenor Museum, 27 Grosvenor Street, Chester, CH1 2DD

The Grosvenor Museum houses collections exploring the history of Chester, its art and silver heritage, and its natural history. Find out about life during the Roman military occupation and visit the Period House, with rooms from the 17th century to the 1920s.

Admission to the museum is free, however we welcome a suggested donation of £3 per person.

Open: Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30am – 5pm, Sunday, 1pm – 4pm. Closed on Monday, but we are open on Bank Holiday Mondays.

1pm: Afternoon Tea: The Queen at Chester Hotel, 52 City Road, Chester, CH1 3AH

(NB: option for coach to pick up group and take to Queen Hotel)

Enjoy the most quintessential of English customs with Afternoon Tea served in the V&A Lounge. Consisting of a selection of finger Sandwiches, warm scones with jam & clotted cream, mini cakes and a range of teas. Or you can upgrade to a Prosecco Afternoon Tea to include a glass of Prosecco. Discounts for group bookings.

4pm: Roman Soldier Tour: Depart from: DEVA Roman Discovery Centre, Pierpoint Lane Chester CH1 1NL

Take part in a walking tour guided by a Roman Soldier for groups of more than 10.  Learn what it was like living as a soldier in the Roman city of DEVA almost 2000 years ago! Learn how to make battle formations and so much more!

Day two:

Walk the walls/Roman Amphitheatre & Roman Gardens

Walk along the Roman walls which were originally built to protect Deva Victrix and admire views of the city, the River Dee and various historic landmarks. Visit the the largest known Roman amphitheatre in Britain, used for military training, gladiatorial combat, and public events. And finally adjacent to the walls, the Roman Gardens which were created in the 1950s using real Roman artifacts and architectural fragments found in Chester. Enjoy the peaceful green space and reconstructed hypocaust (underfloor heating system).

With direct services from London Euston taking just over two hours, and frequent connections from Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester, Avanti West Coast offers a smooth journey straight into the heart of the city.

Chester Railway Station is less than a 10-minute walk from the city centre and close to accommodation options, attractions, and coach pick-up points.
